What is SELECT?

SELECT is a supplemental program organized through the MGS organization that offers players additional opportunities to practice and compete throughout the year. Unlike recreational softball, SELECT is designed for more experienced players, providing a chance to develop skills by playing alongside and against others with a higher level of experience. The program includes practices, friendly games, and tournaments, all aimed at advancing players’ abilities.

What does SELECT offer?

SELECT provides a platform for players to sharpen their skills in a more competitive environment than typical recreational softball. Teams are composed of players with prior experience and advanced abilities, allowing them to compete against similarly skilled teams. This exposure helps players experience a higher level of competition and refine their gameplay.

When does SELECT start?

SELECT begins January 1st and ends the approximately April 1st.  .

When does SELECT end?

According to USA Softball guidelines, the SELECT season concludes on April 1, 2025, however in recent years we have played the first weekend of April also.

What USA Softball rules apply?

USA Softball limits the number of organized events for teams after January 1, 2025. SELECT teams are restricted to one event per week, which includes practices, friendlies, or tournaments. For example, if a team participates in a weekend tournament, they cannot schedule a practice during the same week.

Where are games held?

Friendly games are arranged with other organizations in the local community or nearby areas in Southern California.

Where are tournaments held?

Tournaments are hosted throughout Southern California. While some may involve travel, many are conveniently located in the Conejo or San Fernando Valleys.

When are tournaments played?

Tournament schedules are determined by the team manager and are typically held on weekends. To comply with USA Softball rules, some tournaments may span two weekends, with pool play occurring during the first weekend and elimination rounds the next.

What is the competitive level of tournaments?

SELECT tournaments feature some of the most skilled players from participating organizations, offering a higher level of competition than recreational games or All-Star tournaments. Travel teams are not permitted in these events.

When and where is practice?

Practice schedules are set by the team manager and will follow USA Softball rules after January 1, 2025, allowing only one practice per week. Practices are held in locations within the Moorpark area and are coordinated through MGS.

Who are the SELECT players?

Players for SELECT are chosen through evaluations to identify the top talent in each division. Depending on player and coach availability, there may be two teams per division: one which will be competitive and one which will be developmental. 

Is SELECT right for my daughter?

SELECT is ideal for top-tier players seeking to enhance their skills at an accelerated pace and for mid-level players looking to elevate their game by competing with more experienced peers. For newer players, the competitive environment might feel overwhelming, but it can also provide valuable experience. Parents should consider their child’s current skill level and comfort with competition when deciding.

Should my daughter try out?

If your daughter has demonstrated skills beyond a beginner level, loves softball, and is eager for additional practice and competition, SELECT is an excellent opportunity. Whether she wants a more challenging experience, more practice time, or just enjoys playing softball, trying out is encouraged.

Will everyone who tries out make the team?

If enough players and volunteer managers participate, two teams will be formed in 10u and 12u, with the goal being creating a competitive team and developmental team.  For our 8u division, no evaluations will be held, as this division is primarily developmental. All players will qualify for an 8u Select Team. Additionally, the top 12 players may be invited to participate in USA Softball Tournaments. The decision to attend these tournaments will be at the Manager's discretion.

Who will coach the SELECT teams?

Coaches will submit interest.  If multiple coaches apply, the Select Committee will determine who to appoint as the Select Coach through the interview process.
